Instant Messaging is the industry term used to referred to chat, either one to one or within as a group chat. Instant Messaging originally came to promience with SMS Text Messaging. However, as technology advanced so did Instant Messaging and now includes all forms or text messaging and can also be used to describe media sharing within a text messaging environment.
